Ayurveda and Aromatherapy Health tips for Spring

Spring has come… Unfortunately this year many of us have to stay at home and especially for Londoner it is very tough to stay at home with this recent sunny, wonderful weather! People still can go out for exercise so I can see some people enjoy running and walking. But probably many people must been lazy at home… Because Spring is Kapha dominant season according to Ayurveda.

Spring is Kapha season

After a wet and cold winter, we start feeling warmth when spring comes. According to Ayurveda, Spring is Kapha season. Kapha dosha consists of element of “Earth” and “Water”. These elements are very important for the plants to grow in spring but can also cause us to become imbalanced in kapha dosha.

Kapha dosha is aggravated by qualities that are heavy, moist and cold.

Kapha imbalanced signs

  • Dullness in the mind
  •    weight gain with small amount of food
  •    Excess mucous & congestion
  •    Allergies
  •    Oily skin
  •    Swelling
  •    Cold & clammy skin
  •    Attachment issues

UK and Japan are Kapha dominant country

As you know, United Kingdom and Japan are island, surrounded by the sea. Therefore it is believed that both of them are Kapha dominant according to Ayurveda. It means that it is easier to become imbalanced in Kapha dosha if you live these country. You may be more carefully how to eat, spend your day in Spring.

Ayurveda Tips for Spring

Kapha has the nature of “cold” “heavy” and “oily” when it is aggravated so we can prevent from aggravating Kapha by using opposite ones which are “warm” “light” and “dry”.

  • Eat less and light food (avoid heavy food which takes long to digest)
  • Eat warm food and less oily food.
  • Eat “bitter” “pungent” and “astringent” food
  • Avoid sugar and sweets
  • Take some spices to warm your body – such as ginger and wasabi
  • Do some light exercise – walking is a good idea!
  • Do exercise between 6-10am and 6-10pm (Kapha time)
  • Keep your body warm – warm bath
  • Wake up early and sleep early ** Now many people are working from home / staying at home so it is very easy and tempting to sleep late and wake up late but if it became your habit, it would be very hard to get back to your normal routine!! Be careful!!

Essential oils for balancing Kapha

Because Kapha is water and earth, it is predominately cold, moist, slow and heavy in nature. It can be treated with warming drying, lightening and stimulating therapy. Therefore I would recommend the essential oils which have the properties of removing excess water, warm the body, diaphoretic, stimulant, helping digestion, expectorant and cleansing.

  • Citrus – Lemon, Orange, Lime
  • Spices – anise, black pepper, cinnamon, coriander, ginger oregano, cardamon, clove, cumin, nutmeg, and turmeric
  • herbs – basil, lemongrass, clary sage, dill, hyssop, parsley, peppermint rosemary, thyme, sage
  • flower – chamomile, jasmine, rose, neroli
  • others – juniper, sandalwood, cypress

Citrus can stimulate and refresh your mind so using these citrus essential oil in the morning (for example inhalation) will help you a good start of the day.

When your digestion is not working well, you can cook with some spices and herbs for your meal as well as massaging your abdomen with these essential oil blends.

Juniper and Cypress are fantastic to get rid of the toxin and excess water from your body.

Of course, your favorite aroma always can make you relaxed. Stress is a big enemy for our immune system.

Let’s get through this tough situation with Ayurveda and Aromatherapy!

Ayurveda in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰Day 1

My mission this year for myself is “treating myself well, making myself happy” to make everyone around me happy. No one wants to have  a massage from tired and low-energy person! Recently I had worked so hard and tired… so, I decided to go to Sri Lanka to have Ayurveda detox treatment 1 week…by myself!

I flew with Qatar Airways, it was my first time to fly with them and it was amazing flight! Food, entertainment and cabin attendant, everything was so great! I cried a lot with three movies… Emotional detox has already started.

This time I chose this accommodation.

Siddhalepa Ayurveda Resort

This big resort is alongside the beach, sometimes you can hear birds sing, sound of waves… just perfect to stay without nothing to do…

Relax!

Very clean bed!

Less than 1 minute walk to the beach!

I was told to have a consultation with a doctor tomorrow so I ate a lot without any food restriction. Yay!

Everything was so fresh! and basically not spicy and mild  but you can add some sambal to make it spicier.

After lunch, I attended a cooking demonstration session and the chef showed us how to cook fish curry and dal curry in Ayurvedic way. Basically any oil is not used to make Ayurvedic curry. The chef explained some spices and ingredients and started cooling. Basically he put dal or fish, a little bit of onion and spices and coconut milk in the end and stirred. So easy and it took just 5 minutes but it was so tasty and fresh! I now understand why Ayurvedic food is so light and easy for stomach.

The Benefits of Cleaning Your Tongue

You can tell a lot about your health from looking at your tongue. Your tongue is the direct gateway between your body, mind and the surrounding environment. Maintaining this connection is essential for your overall health.

Tongue scraping is a very old Ayurvedic self-care ritual where you clean your tongue by removing bacteria, toxins, viruses, fungus and build-up by scraping them off in the morning and night. Tongue scrapers come in many materials and shapes, but preferably they should be curved, not too sharp and made from stainless steel, copper, tin, brass and they can even be made out of gold, silver or platinum.
These are just some of the benefits that will definitely support your health and increase your quality of life.

– Removal of bacteria and foul breath – by tongue scraping daily you remove the build -up on your tongue which contains bacteria and, if left untreated, can lead to bad breath.

Improve and sharpen your sense of taste – By cleaning your tongue you sharpen your taste receptors improving your ability to taste your food better.

Heightens communication between food and body – Your tongue is the first place where food and its nutrients can be interpreted by the receptors. By tongue scraping and removing any coating that could be interfering with this connection, you improve the communication between your food and body.

Removal of excessive Keratin – Tongue scraping can contribute to maintaining the balance of keratin on the tongue. If your diet is not healthy and textured or does not contain enough fibers, keratin might accumulate which might cause a discoloration of the coating and ultimately affect your well-being.

Stimulation of the internal organs – From an ayurvedic perspective, tongue scraping helps to stimulate the internal organs through energetic connections with  the rest of the body as well as cleaning the body by removing Ama (accumulation of toxic residue in the mind-body) and bacteria from the oral cavity.

How to use it
Use the tongue scraper two times a day ; just before brushing your teeth first thing in the morning and just before going to bed. First cleanse the scraper with clean water, hold the scraper with both hands, putting  light pressure on it, scraping the surface of your tongue in long stroke. Repeat this 3-8 times until all the coating has been removed. Finish by rinsing your mouth and the tongue scraper with clean water.
